Dry Spell

I haven't written here recently because, well, there's no music in La Conner to write about.

Just kidding. That was too easy.

Picked up some new music for Christmas. By far the most noteworthy album is "Thirteen Cities" by Richmond Fontaine.

It's genius.

Again, I'm not going to try and review music because nobody reads this. But if you are, and you're interested in trying something new, then pick up this CD.

Amigos in Stanwood

Saw a bit of the Dry County Crooks last night at Amigos in Stanwood. This is a Mexican restaurant with a bar attached. They started off a little rough, not enough vocals in the mix, and there was a funky crowd. And they started 45 minutes late, which kinda eats into our time as parents with kids that are at home biting one another's ears off.

I'd like to give them another chance at some point.

Oh yeah, this Mexican restaurant's cantina in a strip mall was FILLED with patrons, despite the totally cheesy bartender doing the whole "Cocktail" thing all night - which wasn't even cool in 1988.

Sigh.

lcartists.com & wonderbread

Nice... so I post about this nifty website a while ago, and now realize it hasn't been updated since then.

Saw a great band at my brother's wedding. The Wonderbread 5. They totally worked the crowd, involved the kids, made everybody sweat and dance like fools.

More Music In Town!

So, as I noted earlier, Knut performed at the Historical Museum in La Conner. And yeah, I attended.

Knut played by himself and was visibly unnerved, mentioning a few times that he felt "naked" without his band. Let me just say this about that: I really enjoy seeing an artist this way - without the cover of their band. I enjoyed hearing Knut's voice more clearly, the way he played his guitar, even his stories in-between songs. I say, more power to you, Knut.

I got to see Patterson Hood recently at the Nightlight in Bellingham and found it to be a great experience as well. It's much more intimate and much less distracting.

Oh, I titled the post "More Music..." because today I got to see Guy's Night Out in the La Conner Middle School gymnasium... they performed for the Chowder Feed. You never really know when or where you're gonna find music here.

lcArtists.com and another Jen

Hmm... seems somebody's decided to be, err, more productive than I.

Stumbled upon the LCArtists website.

Very cool if you're looking for stuff to do. Especially since artists and bar owners can't be bothered to update their websites with current information.

Noted that the mailto: link pointed to a "Jen". I don't know this "Jen", but I know two other Jen's.

Jen? Are you out there?

"Tommy the Cat is my name, and I say unto thee..."

I was skulking about the house the other day trying to avoid cleaning my home office, when it occurred to me that a little music may help motivate me.

Scrolling through my iTunes library, my eyes settled on Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese. So I fired it up ("Fire it up, man!"), cranked the volume, and started cleaning. After a bit, and during the track "Tommy The Cat", my nine-year-old daughter wandered in, her face pinched up like she smelled something bad. After a bit she said, "Daddy, your music scares me."

I take this to mean I'm not too old. I figure if my music scares my daughter - and not in the way that a John Denver Christmas Album would - then I'm still somewhat relevant.

And that's what it's all about.

To Be Fair...

...it'd be unfair for me to not link to the La Conner Institute of Performing Arts, where they actually list a fair number of musical acts, including Flute Force.

WARNING: If you click on the Flute Force link and your speakers are turned on, you will hear music that immediately places you into a googly-eyed trance. Like when Kaa sings to Mowgli. I'm not joking around. If you click the link, make sure you have trained medical personnel on hand to monitor your vital signs.

I'm also certain I smelled patchouli when I viewed their site, but I didn't think that technology existed.

I haven't had a shower, so it could be that, too.
